The Yorta Yorta Nation is the founding Nation of the MLDRIN Confederation. The Yorta Yorta is one of the largest and most well known Nations within Victoria and Australia. This is not just due to the Native Title determination, but from a long history of activism and asserting the rights of their Nation and of all traditional owner groups along the Murray. The Yorta Yorta also have 2 landmark Agreements with the Victorian Governments – The VicRoads Agreement which provides for negotiation processes over infrastructure works on Yorta Yorta traditional country; and the Cooperative Management Agreement which provides for management arrangements over Barmah Forest on the Murray River.

Yorta Yorta Country takes in the townships of Echuca, Shepparton, Mooroopna and Kyabram and includes significant cultural and geographic features such as Barmah/Millewa Forest and parts of Gunbower, Perricoota/Koondrook Forest. Both these sites are internationally recognised and or Ramsar listed as important wetlands systems.

Well known Yorta Yorta people include Monica Morgan, Elizabeth Hoffman, Djaran Whyman, Jimmy Little, Artist Lin Onus and David Wirrpanda.
